UMBC is a medium-sized, selective, public research university that attracts high-achieving students to its undergraduate and graduate programs in the liberal arts and sciences and engineering. The College of Arts & Sciences and the College of Engineering degree programs in the liberal arts and sciences and engineering. The College of Arts & Sciences and the College of Engineering degree programs include 30 majors, 34 minors, 24 areas of concentration, 11 pre-professional and allied health programs, and 7 certificate doctoral programs. The Division of Professional Education and Training includes Summer & Winter Programs, and a variety of credit and non-credit programs and custom workplace training.

UMBC's 9,328 undergraduates and 1,909 graduate students come form 45 states and 91 foreign countries.

The University of Maryland, Baltimore County activities contributes to NOAA's "Weather Ready Nation"goal and addresses the following objectives within this goal: 1) "Healthy people and communities through improved air and water quality", and 2) "Reduced loss of life, property, and disruption from high-impact events". These activities are also relevant to the "Climate Adaptation and Mitigation" goal and associated objectives: 1) "Improved scientific understanding of the changing climate system and its impacts", and 2) "Integrated assessments of current and future states of the climate system that identify potential impacts and inform science, services, and decisions".
